During my years as a classroom teacher, literacy specialist, numeracy specialist and curriculum consultant for schools in the Warren Blackwood district, I spent a lot of time talking with parents of children from Kindy to Senior High School. These parents had children in mainstream schools, education support centres, playgroups. Some were homeschoolers.
I was concerned that it can be difficult, as a parent, to access the quality information you need either to give your kids a good start in literacy or numeracy or to help them if they are struggling. Because there is so much information available on the internet nowadays, it’s really difficult to know what actually works.
In 2008 I made a decision to focus on helping parents learn how to support their children more at home. As well as provide online ‘how to’ information and products, I also run workshops and have a three-way coaching service.
I’ve created a simple test that reveals whether a child is on track in number, right from the start. It’s called Maths Test For 6-8 Year Olds but it’s also suitable for older children who have struggled for years with maths.
